Next week, Product Creation Studio’s Director of Mechanical Engineering, Don Baumgarten, will speak at AMI’s Medical Tubing and Catheter Virtual Congress. Don will share insights on innovation opportunities and challenges in minimally-invasive and implantable medical devices.

AMI interviewed Don ahead of the conference to find out his thoughts on the biggest challenges in the sector and key medical device developments in the last couple of years.

Here are some of Don’s notable Points from the interview:

  • Product innovation is a major driver of business growth. Whether your company is a material supplier, equipment supplier, or medical device manufacturer, your competitors will pass you by if you don’t innovate. Minimally invasive medical devices and implantable devices are two growth industries that provide opportunities for the sector to grow. International markets around the globe provide ever-expanding opportunities for growth as well.

  • Determining what innovations to bring to market may be the biggest challenge every business faces. Companies need to innovate to grow, but innovation requires an investment of limited resources. The best way to overcome this challenge is to focus your R&D efforts through better insight into the specific needs of your target customers and end-users. Work closely with them to be confident you’re solving big problems and bringing the right products to market. Creating a product innovation roadmap for your company that includes incremental product improvements and fundamentally new product concepts is a winning combination.
