FurnitureSmith – Rethinking Furniture Design
From Unique Design Concepts to Manufacturable Furniture

The engineering team successfully took my unique chair designs and readied them for commercialization with functional, user-friendly prototypes used to launch the furniture line. Furniture Smith is a furniture design company established by Cameron Smith, CEO and co-founder of Product Creation Studio. As an award-winning product designer, Cameron had the design concepts well in hand. However, he needed to evolve these designs for manufacturability and also needed support in developing and fabricating prototypes for cosmetic, functional verification, and marketing purposes.

Product Creation Studio offered FurnitureSmith the mechanical engineering expertise needed to move the designs from concept design to functional prototypes and production chairs. Our ability to create prototypes in different materials in-house made us a good fit to bring the designs to life for the inaugural launch.

Product Creation Studio’s Role

Product Creation Studio brought a framework of innovation and creativity to the FurnitureSmith project providing expertise in ergonomics and proportions.

The chair designs are novel — and the geometry is aggressive — which meant the designs needed careful analysis to ensure they were not only comfortable but structurally sound as well.

Furthermore, Product Creation Studio’s expertise in material engineering supported the premium market that FurnitureSmith is poised for. With material selection playing a critical role, our engineering team had to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each material and apply their learnings to design choices and develop specialized manufacturing techniques.

Product Creation Studio fabricated carbon fiber parts, built tools for wet-forming leather, and created novel ways to fabricate parts not commonly found in furniture design to maintain the design direction and achieve the final look.
